Cooking Club

Cooking Club is a highlight of Mimi’s week. The club was started so Mimi and her friends could spend time together during lockdown while learning life skills. Over 4 months the children happily cooked together in their own kitchens and enjoyed sharing pictures of the meals they had made.

As well as learning how to prepare the meals Mimi also learnt how to write out a shopping list and follow a recipe.

Mimi also wrote out a list of the utensils she would need and the method. Writing the verbs and adjectives in a different colour helped to familiarise her with these figures of speech.

English

In English Mimi is working on spelling, sentence construction and creative writing.

In the Montessori teaching method the figures of speech are represented by different colours and shapes. Making colourful sentence paper chains is a fun way to practice sentence construction.

Mimi has been working on story writing. Three of the elements of a story are a setting, characters and a plot.

This castle built from boxes, tubes and cardboard is the setting for an interactive story . The drawing, cutting and gluing involved in model building all help with fine motor development. Many other skills are also developed through this activity including planning, observation, measuring and the need for accuracy.

Mimi’s story is about daring detectives who catch a bunch of jewel thieves.

The upper floor and roof of the castle can be lifted off so she can move her characters around the garden and rooms as the story as the adventure unfolds.

Parent Recommendation

Mimi is beaming with confidence from reading passages of finely written books with such patience, care and guidance from teacher Caroline, navigating google to enhance vocabulary and learning typing skills in the process. She’s become so much more independent tackling her Maths and English I’m amazed..
