Cooking Coach

Cooking with children provides the perfect combination of skills and tasks to address your child’s development in a fun and rewarding way.

In the kitchen, your child will develop life skills while preparing delicious meals to share. Leaning to read and follow a recipe, planning ingredients and menus, calculating quantities and budgets.

Children can practice loco-motor skills, body management skills and object control skills while they move from one place to the other carrying ingredients and equipment. Fine motor skills such as whole-hand grasping and the pincer grasp (necessary skills for writing) are employed in food preparation.

Another aspect of physical development is the sensory stimulation that you can experience while cooking. Taste and smell are obvious sensory inputs, however Coach Caroline will challenge imagination and colour co-ordination.

Literacy skills are part of cooking too. Coach Caroline will share texts and prose that inspire foods and the development of complex menus. Reading recipes and learning the names of ingredients is a literacy activity. Another reading/writing activity could be making fancy menus and inviting friends and family to enjoy the meal.

Cognitive development is all about intellectual skills such as remembering and analyzing information and predicting outcomes. Cooking with a child provides many opportunities to develop these skills. By asking open-ended questions Coach Caroline will explore what steps they have completed and what they need to do next, helping them think through the processes of preparing the ingredients, following the recipe and putting the meal together.

Nutrition is challenging with children and Coach Caroline will help them understand and plan balanced meals that are delicious and nourishing.
